How to insert any video formats such as FLV, MP4, MKV, RMVB and etc into Microsoft PowerPoint presentation? If we use Insert-Movie option, PowerPoint supports only few movie formats, such as avi, asf, mpeg, wmv… In other word not all video formats are supported by Ms PowerPoint. Let’s say that you have a FLV video and you want to embed the FLV to your powerpoint slide, so what you have to do?
If it is the case then you will need an ActiveX Control, an additional plugin that will enable you to insert or control all video formats into your slide. I found that VLC player comes with its Video/Audio ActiveX plugin, so I think I can use it on another third party programs like powerpoint. I have made a small experiment with the VLC ActiveX in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, and by using this plugin I could insert any video/audio formats to powerpoint presentation.
Okay, lets stop the babbling, here are some necessary steps that you have to do if you want to insert FLV, MP4, MKV, MP3, WAV or any other video/audio formats into Microsoft PowerPoint presentation:
1. Download and install VLC Player. Just make sure you have checked “ActiveX Plugin” during installation.

2. Restart Microsoft PowerPoint program
3. Enable Developer tab; click office button – PowerPoint Options – Select (tick) “Show Developer Tab in the Ribbon”

4. Go to Developer tab and click “More Controls” icon in Controls menu.

5. Select “VideoLAN VLC ActiveX Plugin v2” and then hit OK

6. Click and drag your mouse to create an object area in your slide
7. Press right-click on the object’s area and choose “Properties”
8. Type / enter the file’s path in “MRL” value, eg. D:Movie DOJOvideo.flv
Note: If you have saved your ppt document under the same folder with the video file, just type the video’s file name and extension, for example: video.mp4

9. Exit properties window
10. Now, try to run slideshow (or press F5) and see the result!
If you’ve followed all the steps above you will be able to run your any video formats in slideshow mode, however you cannot use this trick to insert SWF into powerpoint. Okay folks, that’s all! I hope this trick is useful to help you to insert FLV, MP4 or any video / audio formats into Microsoft PowerPoint presentation 2010, 2007 and 2003, good luck

useless for powerpoint 2003.
I just used it in powerpoint 2003. As long as you enabled the active X bit when you install VLC, all you have to do is find the “More Controls” button and add it to a tool bar. Once you’ve done that the rest is the same.
Great tip! Thanks!
I am on step #6, but I don’t understand how to create an object’s area in a slide. I have tried inserting an object but I am not sure if that is the right thing to do or not….
hi Carmen,
To create an object area: click anywhere within your slide’s area (and hold your mouse) – drag it – and release
I’m also having difficulty creating the object area. When I click and drag I see a white-outlined box get created, but as soon as I let go it disappears and right-clicking is ineffective. Perhaps this is due to using PowerPoint 2007 instead of 2010? Is there an alternate way to create an object area so the properties can be modified?
It does not work for me with Powerpoint 2010 !! Gives me un error message ( to send or not to microsoft…) i did download VLC latest and active x enabled….seems strange…any clues?
when i create an object are it shows the error…”the windows have encountered a problem ..it needs to close down…sorry for the in convenience”
