Few days back I have covered some tips to enable and disable USB port, also I mentioned how to do that without accessing the registry editor. Yup, in some cases you cannot open the regedit on windows, it can be caused by a virus or if you use computers in your office or school, it is likely that access to the registry editor has been blocked by the administrator. When you try to open it then a popup will be appears with this message : “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator“.

Then how to enable regedit? Here is an easy trick for you, just follow to these steps :
1. Go to Menu – Run
2. Type “gpedit.msc” on the open box then click OK (or press enter!)

run gpedit msc

3. Now you’re on “Group Policy Object Editor” environment
4. On the left pane, explore / go to “User Configuration – Administrative Templates – System”

windows group policy editor

5. On the right pane, select and open (double click) “Prevent access to registry editing tools”
6. On the properties window, select / check “Not Configured” or “Disabled”. Both values will re-enable access to regedit.

enable and disable access to registry editor

7. Click apply and OK
8. Try to run registry editor via run box.

Problems?
There’s no “run” on the start menu, what can I do?
Okay, don’t worry, download Regtools.vbs (Right click – Save Link As) and then execute the file. By using this script you can change the group policy to enable registry editor.
